Chat
The Chat tab, choosing where you talk, slash commands, who hears you, speech bubbles and the limits.
Press Enter or T to open the chat line, Enter to send, and Esc to close the line without sending. The row along the top of the chat box holds the tabs, Time, which shows or hides timestamps, and Hide / Show, which shrinks the box to that row or brings it back. The game remembers whether you left it shown or hidden.
One Chat tab
Everything players say lands in the Chat tab: Local lines, Global lines and whispers, each whole line in its channel's colour.
| Channel | Colour | A line looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Local (Say) | White, #FFFFFF | RED: hi |
| 1. Global | Pale pink, #FFC0C0 | [1. Global] RED: hi |
| Whisper | Purple, #FF80FF | From RED: hi, or To RED: hi for one you sent |
- Your own name is bold white on every channel.
- A Global line from a player in another region names the region:
[1. Global] [Kanto] RED: hi. - Linked Pokémon and items keep their own colours inside a line: blue for a Pokémon, amber for an item.
- Click a player's name for Whisper, Inspect card, Spectate, Add friend and Block.
The other two tabs keep their own lines: System for game notices, and Battle for battle messages after the fight is over. While typing, Page Up and Page Down move between the tabs. Whatever tab is open, a line you send and its answer show on Chat. Each tab keeps its last 300 lines.
To link something in a line, type @ and press Tab to pick one of your party Pokémon, or
# for an item in your bag.
Choosing where you talk
Chat starts on Local every time you sign in. The tag in front of the line names where it goes (Say, 1. Global, or Whisper and the player's name), and what you type takes that channel's colour. The channel stays until you change it or sign out.
While the line is open, Tab moves to the next channel and Shift+Tab to the one before. On a gamepad, LB and RB do the same. The order is:
- Say (Local)
-
- Global
- Whisper
Whisper joins the order once you have someone to whisper: after /w name, /r, the Whisper
action on a player, or once somebody has whispered you. Stepping onto it with no one picked
answers the last player who whispered you.
While the @ or # suggestion list is showing, Tab inserts the highlighted link instead of
changing channel. Enter sends.
Slash commands
| Type in chat | What it does |
|---|---|
/say text or /s text | Sends that line on Local |
/1 text | Sends that line on Global |
/w name text or /whisper name text | Whispers a player |
/r text or /reply text | Answers the last player who whispered you |
- One line or from now on. With text after it, a command sends just that one line there,
and your channel stays where it was. Typed alone (
/say,/1,/w name,/r), it switches the chat line to that channel and leaves it open for you to type. - Starting a line with a slash. Type two:
//shrugsends/shrug. A/on its own is sent as it is. - Unknown words are not sent. A slash word chat does not know answers "Unknown command /word. Try /say, /1, /w, /r." and nothing reaches other players, so a typo never goes out as a message.
/gand/pare not available, and send nothing.
The commands are not case-sensitive. The console's say command sends on Local as well.
Console commands do not run from chat; they are in the Commands section.
Who hears what
| Channel | Who hears it |
|---|---|
| Local | Players on your map and on the maps directly connected to it, on your world channel |
| Global | Every player online, on every channel and in every region |
| Whisper | The one player you name, wherever they are |
Speech bubbles
What a player says also shows in a bubble over their head, in the line's colour.
| Line | Bubble |
|---|---|
| Local | Over the speaker whenever you can see them |
| Global and whispers | Only when the speaker is on your screen |
| Your own lines | Over you, whispers you send included |
| System, Battle and notices | Never |
- A bubble stays up for 4 seconds plus 0.05 seconds for each character of the line, and never longer than 10 seconds. A new line from the same player replaces the old one.
- It shows up to 80 characters on up to 3 lines; the rest is replaced by
…. The whole line is in the Chat tab.
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Length of a line | 200 characters |
| Lines | One every half second, on all channels together |
| Links | 4 in a line |
| Whispers | 20 a minute |
| New people whispered | 5 players who are not your friends, every 10 minutes |
When a limit stops a line, one line on the Chat tab says how long to wait, for example "Slow down: you can chat again in 1 s" or "Too many whispers, wait 12 s". Nothing is lost: the line goes back into the chat box so you can send it again, and until the wait is over, pressing Enter on that channel keeps it there instead of sending it.
The cap on new people works a little differently. Its wait is given in minutes ("You have whispered too many new people, wait 4 min"), and in the meantime you can still whisper your friends and anyone you whispered already.
Control characters are removed from what you type, and formatting codes such as [b] show as
you typed them.
